Not all landscaping projects require council approval. Minor works such as garden edging, a small deck, or the installation of softscapes like plants, soil, mulch and turf are likely to be considered exempt. You may however need council approval for more things than you think. A retaining wall over a certain height or a deck over a certain number of square metres may need approval. If in doubt, check with your local council. For more information on council approval visit our simple guide.

The Home Building Compensation Fund (HBCF) provides a safety net for home owners in NSW faced with incomplete and defective building work carried out by a builder or tradesperson.
Licensed contractors that take on residential work over $20,000 must have insurance cover through HBCF. A Certificate of Insurance issued by HBCF compensates homeowners for losses arising from defective and incomplete work where the builder or tradesperson has become insolvent, dies, disappears or has their building licence suspended by NSW Fair Trading due to non-compliance with a money order made in favour of the homeowner by the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal or a court.
If your project is over $20,000 Shaw Landscape Group will obtain this insurance on your behalf before your project commences. More information about this insurance can be found here.
