CLIENT BRIEF
Our client engaged Shaw Landscape Group to transform a steep and underutilised residential block into a practical, evolving native garden that balances beauty and function—enhancing security and privacy, attracting birdlife, and creating safe, usable spaces for family living.
With emphasis on achieving a strong aesthetic, recurring words from the client’s brief defined this project; “Beautiful, yet practical”.
OUR APPROACH
The key challenge was how to resolve a sloping site without introducing overly dominant retaining structures that would visually overwhelm the garden. Our approach adopted a combination of retaining walls and banked planting to work with the natural fall of the site and maintain a balanced and cost-effective earthworks strategy.
As the client’s brief placed equal emphasis on beauty and function, material selection played a key role in unifying the landscape. With natural sandstone, decomposed granite and feature boulders, the landscape grew a natural and cohesive character.
Paired with a native-led planting palette with a subtle Hamptons influence, the colourful selection of plants provide a softness and strong focus on elevating the home’s aesthetic. Layered planting introduces seasonal colour, texture, and habitat value, enhancing birdlife and supporting a vibrant, evolving garden experience.
Finally, perimeter fencing is integrated as an architectural element, improving security and privacy while contributing positively to the overall street presentation and visual cohesion of the landscape.
