Bursting with creativity, Kindy Korner Childcare Centre in Unanderra presented us with a landscape concept plan to makeover their existing outdoor play area. The plan incorporated a number of fun & inspiring learning-based spaces using a variety of hard and softscaping materials to create a unique play environment the kids can learn in and enjoy.
Drawing inspiration from the concept plan, the team introduced an earthy colour palette with the use of sandstone logs for a yarning circle, pebbles for a dry river bed, timber logs for balancing beams, as well as a meandering ‘bike track’ made from soft fall rubber.
An oversized chalkboard for outdoor learning was then introduced, followed by a new sandpit, bamboo maze and a ‘working’ kitchen with running water to encourage water play. Overarching the dry river bed, the team installed a custom designed bridge made from Spotted Gum.
A brand new deck was installed made from a no maintenance composite material that won’t splinter, or carry any harmful exposed fixtures. This was paired with steps carved into a log for easy access to the deck. Native grasses were installed to the garden areas mixed with bluestone steppers, cobblestone edging and recycled sandstone ‘crazy’ paving. Corten Steel planters create a space where the kids can plant a new herb garden. Artificial turf throughout the shaded areas, mixed with Zoysia was laid to green up the space.
