Why You Need a Landscape Design BEFORE We Can Quote Your Project
At Shaw Landscape Group, one of the most common questions we get asked is:
“Can you just give me a rough price for the landscaping?”
And while we completely understand why people ask — the honest answer is… not accurately.
The reality is, a landscape design is the blueprint for your entire project. Without it, any pricing is simply guesswork.
If you were building a home, you wouldn’t ask a builder to quote without architectural plans. Landscaping is exactly the same. The design is what allows us to understand the scope, materials, finishes, levels, quantities and complexity of the project before construction begins.
Without a plan, there are simply too many unknowns.
A professionally prepared landscape design gives clarity to everyone involved — the Client, the Landscape Architect and the Construction Team.
It answers important questions like:
- What areas are being landscaped?
- What finishes and materials are planned?
- Are there retaining walls, stairs or drainage requirements?
- What planting style, pot sizes and quantities of plants are to be installed?
- Is there irrigation, lighting, paving or custom construction involved?
- How much labour and machinery will be required?
- Are there any access issues or site constraints?
Without these details, it’s impossible to prepare a realistic construction cost.
Otherwise, we’re left making assumptions — and assumptions are where budgets can quickly blow out.
One of the most common frustrations homeowners experience is designing their dream landscape… only to discover afterwards that it’s well beyond their budget.
This usually happens when the design and the budget were never aligned from the beginning.
The best approach — every single time — is to be upfront about your budget early in the process.
Not because we want to “spend every dollar”, but because it allows the design team to create something achievable, realistic and tailored specifically to your priorities.
When clients openly share their budget with our Landscape Architect and Estimator, the entire process becomes far more strategic.
For example: If your budget is $80,000, we can design with that in mind by balancing elements such as:
- Material selections
- Size and scale
- Retaining methods
- Planting quantities
- Feature elements
- Staging opportunities
- Construction complexity
The result?
A landscape that looks incredible and can actually be built within your investment range.
Many people understandably think the process should go like this:
- Price it
- Create the dream design
- Adjust later if needed (This can lead to avoidable reworks and added design costs)
But in reality, this often creates disappointment.
Why?
Because landscaping costs can vary enormously depending on finishes, access, levels, engineering requirements and construction detail. Not to mention – one small change can often affect another area of your project. Two landscapes may look visually similar on paper — but one could cost $80,000 while another could cost $150,000 depending on what sits behind the design.
Without understanding your budget first, our Landscape Architect is essentially designing blind.
That often leads to:
- Multiple redesigns
- Delays
- Budget shock
- Compromises late in the process
- Additional design costs
Designing to a budget is far more efficient than trying to reverse engineer a completed concept later.
At Shaw Landscape Group, our design process is highly collaborative. We don’t believe in creating beautiful concepts that are unrealistic to build. Instead, our Landscape Architect works closely with our Construction Estimator from the very beginning to ensure the design aligns with:
- Your lifestyle
- Your property
- Your vision
- Your priorities
- And MOST importantly — your budget
This integrated approach helps create a smoother experience from concept through to construction, with far fewer surprises along the way.
